Lake County joins growing movement to defund ALA

By John Labriola - The ripple effect from Citrus County's decision in late August to cut ties with the American Library Association (ALA) over its Marxist LGBT activist agenda is continuing to spread across the state of Florida.

Last week, Lake County became the eighth Florida county in just over three months to drop its membership in the ALA, as the Lake County Commission voted 5-0 to stop paying dues to the far-left organization and its state chapter, the Florida Library Association. The decision will save the county's taxpayers about $3,000 a year in dues.

Inspired by Citrus County's example, and with guidance from the Christian Family Coalition, Lake County conservative activists launched a two-week campaign to get the issue on the commission's agenda and then packed the commission chamber on Nov. 28 to blast the ALA's aggressive promotion of "Drag Queen Story Hours" and LGBT smut to minors.

Residents also denounced the ALA's self-declared "Marxist lesbian" president Emily Drabinski, who has said libraries "need to be a site of socialist organizing" and has called for "queering the catalog."

"This organization has migrated from promoting literacy to advocating for the sexual indoctrination of children. It has no place in the public square," said Andy Dubois, chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus of Lake-Sumter.

Lake County Commissioner Sean Parks dismissed the ALA's false narrative that opponents of its vile agenda are in favor of "book banning."

"You're free in this country to write a book and say whatever you want," Parks said. "What we want in Lake County is not to have that be pushed and widely disseminated to children 18 or under."

The commission's unanimous vote was met with loud applause from the audience.

The six other counties that have severed ties with the ALA since Citrus are Hernando, Collier, Lee, Pasco, Santa Rosa and Sarasota.
