Citrus defunds ALA

By John Labriola - Citrus County commissioners on Tuesday backed up the Library Advisory Board's Aug. 22 recommendation to discontinue membership dues to the American Library Association (ALA), making Citrus one one of the first counties in the Southeastern United States to join the growing national movement of counties and states cutting ties with the far-left organization and its self-declared "Marxist lesbian" president.

"Marxism says you don't own your property. Marxism says you don't get to make decisions about your kids. Marxism is the end of our freedom," said Commissioner Diana Finegan. "I took an oath to the Constitution, and for me that will always be standing against Marxism."

Finegan noted that Sen. Marco Rubio has demanded a federal investigation into the ALA's efforts to censor Christian publisher Brave Books and author/actor Kirk Cameron's family-friendly story hours. Rubio also has called for halting all federal funding to the ALA, which has become notorious for its aggressive advocacy of drag queen story hours and exposing children to explicit LGBT materials.

Commissioner Rebecca Bays said the top 10 books the ALA celebrates on its website include depictions of child sexual abuse as well as anti-police and other antisocial themes.

"It's time to shut it down until they come back in line with who we are and the values of Americans," Bays said.

The discussion came less than a week after more than 30 conservative residents showed up at the commission's Sept. 7 budget hearing to make sure ALA funding was removed from the budget, which it was. About a dozen residents were back Tuesday to urge commissioners to also turn down an unsolicited "donation" offer from a tiny group of angry local leftists who said they would pay the county to remain in the ALA.

"Some of the problems we have is because of big pockets of corrupt people like George Soros who have donated money to these causes," said Joel Stone of Citrus Springs.

Although far-left Commissioner Holly Davis agreed with her colleagues that accepting private donations from any group would set a bad precedent, she lashed out at the Citrus Crusader for informing the public and commissioners about the county's membership in the ALA and accused concerned residents of being "whipped into a frenzy" over what she considers a trivial issue.

Residents can email Davis HERE to demand an apology for her insulting and hateful remarks and urge her to resign over her obvious contempt for this community's conservative Christian values.
