Savings from BookPage cancellation could go to honor Charlie Kirk

By John Labriola - The Citrus County Library Advisory Board (LAB) on Tuesday will discuss a proposal to reallocate some or all of the $3,300 in savings from canceling the county library system's annual BookPage subscription to create a Charlie Kirk memorial display in the libraries, featuring books written by Charlie Kirk and recommended by him.

LAB member Rhys Campell has placed the discussion item on the agenda for the board's meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 9 a.m. The meeting will take place in Room 166 of the Lecanto Government Building, 3600 W Sovereign Path, Lecanto, FL 34461

"What better way to [use] the funds?" Campbell said. "Charlie Kirk was an American icon and a Medal of Freedom winner, which is a big deal. He was killed for not just his political beliefs but also for his Christian beliefs."

Campbell says Kirk, who was assassinated by a leftist in Utah on Sept. 10, is "just as important" as Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated in 1968 and is currently featured in a mural painting at one of the libraries.

The Charlie Kirk display could include his books The College Scam and Right Wing Revolution, as well as books by a variety of other authors he recommended including 1984 and Brave New WorldMan's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, The Road to Serfdom by F.A. Hayek, and I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist by Frank Turek and Norman Geisler. Some of the books that aren't already in the library system's collection could be purchased with the reallocated funds, Campbell said.

He said the library could put up the display through October 2026 to commemorate Kirk's recent assassination, and then during the month of October in subsequent years. Kirk was born on Oct. 14, which President Donald Trump has designated as the National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk.

The county's BookPage subscription, which runs through February, was canceled by the County Commission last month after many residents complained about the book review magazine's consistent promotion of left-wing themes, but the money was left in the budget. The subscription included about 100 copies of BookPage a month for each of the five branch libraries. About 38 percent of library systems in the nation subscribe to the magazine, but Commissioner Jeff Kinnard said library patrons can be directed to a number of book review sites that are available for free online.
