Inverness City Council urged to condemn pro-abortion Amendment 4

By John Labriola - About a dozen residents urged the Inverness City Council on Tuesday to adopt a resolution formally condemning pro-abortion Amendment 4, which would enshrine late-term abortion on demand in the Florida Constitution if approved by voters in November.

"Amendment 4 is intentionally deceptive and intends to codify virtually unregulated abortion into our Florida State Constitution," said Anna Loughridge, a pro-life advocate from Crystal River. "Key terms such as 'viability,' 'health' and 'health care provider' are left vague, misleading, and could be interpreted in unlimited ways with zero government oversight or regulation."

The Collier County Commission, the Gilchrist County Commission, and the Trenton City Council have all voted to condemn Amendment 4, which is designed to make voters believe it allows regulation of abortion after "viability" but includes a broad "health" loophole that would allow abortion to the moment of birth if the "healthcare provider" (who can be the abortion clinic nurse) claims it's necessary "to protect the patient's health," which courts have interpreted as justifying abortion for virtually any reason.

Amendment 4 would repeal Florida's Heartbeat Protection Act, make abortion the only procedure not to require parental consent for minors, do away with Florida's 24-hour waiting period for abortions, and abolish existing abortion clinic safety regulations.

Lala Sanders of Inverness passed out a copy of a resolution adopted last month by the Citrus County Republican Party condemning Amendment 4. She asked the council to do the same.

"Please do the right thing. You will be doing something that brings honor and glory to God," she said.

Mayor Bob Plaisted and all five councilmembers thanked residents for coming and speaking their hearts.

"Small communities throughout the state have to stand up because it's difficult to overcome the big cities," said Plaisted, who has been a member of Citrus County Right to Life since the 1990s.

Added Councilmember Gene Davis: "If I as a councilman have any influence at all and it can sway just one vote, I am 100 percent in opposing Amendment 4 as a father, as a husband, and as a Christian. That's my stand."

The city is looking into adopting a resolution to condemn Amendment 4.
