Commission reacts to LGBT porn in the libraries

By John Labriola - Blowback over LGBT smut targeting minors in the libraries hit the Citrus County Commission meeting this week as Commissioner Diana Finegan called for disciplinary action against the employee responsible for purchasing "Jack of Hearts (and other Parts)," a hard-core gay porn novel in the “Young Adult” section of the Citrus County library system, which is for children ages 12-18.

"I was so appalled at what I read," said Finegan, who passed out excerpts from the book to her colleagues. "When we talk about pedophilia, this is an adult man writing as a 17-year-old boy giving sexual instruction to teenagers... There should be disciplinary action [against] whoever thought this was OK for a 12-year-old."

The book was one of 26 titles recently pulled off the shelves by library staff in response to a written complaint from Mike O'Connell of Floral City, who attended this week's commission meeting. Staff is reviewing the books, whose fate may ultimately be determined by the county's Library Advisory Board.

Finegan thanked O'Connell from the dais.

"You're probably going to get railed over this like you're some right-wing, book-banning crazy person, but you know what? I guess I'm going to have to be right there with you, and I will stand beside you to make sure these kinds of things aren't in there," Finegan said. "This is pornographic material."

Finegan disagreed with a woman who absurdly stated during public comment that government shouldn’t interfere with what books are available for children in the library – a government-funded institution.

“We have ratings on movies, there are ratings on music, and in the libraries we have sections. This is in a section for children, and it should not be at all,” she said.

Commissioner Jeff Kinnard agreed.

"I read two paragraphs and it's appalling that it's in the children's section," he said.

Added Commissioner Rebecca Bays: "The book is absolutely not appropriate. I don't know how this book ended up in the library. I believe staff has some work to do to figure this out."

Liberal Commissioners Holly Davis and Ruthie Schlabach, who have falsely claimed on several occasions that there are no pornographic materials in the libraries, were clearly taken aback. Both sheepishly claimed it's an example of how "the policy is working," referring to the library system's complex procedures allowing patrons to request reconsideration of materials.

The Citrus Crusader attempted to contact Library Director Adam Chang to find out who ordered the materials in question, but he didn't return the call.
