Commission refuses to condemn Trump conviction
By John Labriola - Less than two weeks after Donald Trump was convicted of an unknown crime in a New York kangaroo court, over half a dozen residents addressed Citrus County Commissioners this week about their failure to condemn the Democrat Party's use of lawfare against the opposition in a presidential election year.
"Some day, history is going to look back at this time, and it's not going to look well for anybody who didn't speak up," said Mike O'Connell of Floral City.
In February, the Citrus County Republican Party passed a resolution sponsored by now-commission candidate Ken Walters urging the County Commission to condemn the multiple politically motivated prosecutions against Trump.
Commissioners ignored it, despite hearing from a handful of residents at a commission meeting.
Several months later, following the conviction, residents were back to remind commissioners of their failure to act.
"Political persecution is not fair and we all know it," said Lala Sanders of Inverness.
Commissioner Diana Finegan was the only commission member who responded. Following her bruising battle over last year's border resolution, she said she would have supported the resolution if another commissioner had sponsored it, but none did.
The other four commissioners were silent, including the three who are running for reelection this year: Ruthie Schlabach, Jeff Kinnard and Holly Davis.
All three are facing opposition in the Aug. 20 primary from more-conservative challengers.
Ruthie Schlabach's opponent is Janet Barek.
Jeff Kinnard is running against Curtiss Bryant.
And Holly Davis has drawn two opponents: Ken Walters and Jesse Rumson.
