Holly Davis chickens out

By John Labriola - Faced with certain defeat, leftist County Commissioner Holly Davis withdrew her bid for reappointment to the Citrus County Republican Executive Committee (REC) ahead of this week's REC meeting in Lecanto.

Davis, who was removed from the REC's rolls last year for missing too many meetings, submitted an application to rejoin after attending her first REC meeting in many months in September, when she was greeted by boos. 

But she was a no-show again at this Monday's REC meeting, where the prospect of Davis reentering the organization drew a near-record crowd of members eager to block her return.

Her decision to skip the meeting came after the Citrus Crusader sent members an email encouraging them to attend and vote down her application based on her ultra-liberal record – including her vote for last month's huge 18 percent property tax hike, her support for overdevelopment, and her LGBT activism. 

In her absence, the REC secretary read a statement from Davis in which she claimed her decision to withdraw was due to her "heavy schedule."

Rep. Massullo responds to accusations against his medical practice

Ralph Massullo on Friday responded to accusations against him and his medical practice that were made in an article published in last week's edition of the Citrus Eagle , the predecessor to this publication.  The article, authored by Billy Cayce, reported that Massullo and his partner Dr. William Welton III of Suncoast Dermatology and Skin Surgery Center, which has offices in Lecanto and Ocala, paid the federal government a $2.3 million fine in December 2020 for Medicare fraud. The article was based on an  announcement posted on the website of the U.S. Office of Inspector General (OIG) , which reported that the $2.3 million payment stemmed from falsified patient records and claims prepared by a Suncoast shareholder employee, who allegedly upcoded procedures and overstated the size and type of excised lesions, leading to unnecessary follow-up procedures.  Massullo, who contacted the  Citrus Eagle  three days after the article was published, said he orde
