Citrus patriots demand border security

John Labriola - Citrus County patriots are weighing in on what they would like to see in a revised border security resolution once Commissioner Diana Finegan brings it back to the commission for a vote.

Finegan, the resolution’s sponsor, pulled it from the commission’s Oct. 10 meeting agenda where it was initially scheduled to be discussed, saying she wanted to rework the language to support Gov. Ron DeSantis' efforts to fight illegal immigration while also urging more border enforcement action from Congress and the federal government.

“I said this is a way we can support our governor in his efforts, [but] the wording may not exactly bring that forward. It may be ordering instead of supporting,” she said.

The original resolution had called on DeSantis to send the state militia to the U.S. southern border to help stop the flood of illegal aliens caused by Biden's Open Borders policies. The language was taken from a resolution adopted last month by the Citrus County Republican Executive Committee (REC), which asked Finegan – as the commission's only REC member – to bring it up for a vote at a commission meeting. The Lee County REC adopted the same language in February, a few months before DeSantis sent about 1,000 National Guard soldiers and law enforcement officers to Texas to help with border security.

Despite its being pulled from the agenda, several residents addressed the issue and urged the commission to take a strong stand against illegal immigration.

"We need our borders protected," said Tod Cloud, a Republican candidate for the Florida House of Representatives and retired Florida Highway Patrol trooper.

Finegan said she had been getting a lot of feedback about her resolution, mostly positive, and wanted to make sure the language was "absolutely spot on."

"We can't come out and speak loud enough against illegal immigration in this community," Finegan said, noting the $151 billion annual financial impact of illegal immigration on U.S. taxpayers. "Most people in this community are concerned about illegal immigration, and I want to be a voice for those people, so we'll bring something back. I want to make sure it's conveying exactly what you want to say."

Finegan's decision to put the resolution on hold while taking further input prompted the Republican Liberty Caucus of Citrus County at its Oct. 17 meeting to approve a motion asking the commission to include the following three urgings in the revised resolution:

1. Urge Congress to use the Power of the Purse to oppose any further Continuing Resolutions, Budget Bills, debt ceiling increases, etc., until the Border Wall is fully funded and the border situation is under control.
2. Urge Congress to introduce Articles of Impeachment against Alejandro Mayorkas and Joe Biden for willfully violating their oaths to the United States Constitution in allowing and encouraging the current invasion at the Southern border by refusing to enforce and openly violating our nation's border enforcement and immigration laws.
3. Urge the Florida Legislature to pass a law similar to Senate Bill 11 in Texas to authorize law enforcement to arrest illegal aliens for the crime of entering the state illegally.
