Save a baby's life!
By John Labriola - The Citrus Pregnancy Center will host its annual Walk for Life on Saturday, May 13, at the Depot Pavilion in downtown Inverness, 218 N Apopka Ave., Inverness, FL 34450. Check-in is at 8 a.m. and the walk starts at 9 a.m.
Also known as the Great Stork Race, the 2-mile walk is held every year to raise money for and increase awareness about the pregnancy center.
"It's a stroller to wheelchair event. It's not about being the fastest," said Barb Gosa, the center's director. "Lots of families participate, and we have church teams that engage in friendly competition over who can raise the most."
Founded in 1999, the Citrus Pregnancy Center, which has two offices at 3185 E Thomas St. in Inverness and 726 NE Hwy 19 in Crystal River, offers free and confidential pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, a "baby boutique," parenting education, adoption support and other resources to help women choose life for their unborn babies.
"Sometimes we hear the accusation that we just want women to have their babies and then abandon them, and that's not true. We're there for them as long as they perceive a need for our services," Gosa said.
The Christian ministry serves over 500 clients a year. Gosa says about half the women who show up are at risk for having an abortion, often because of pressure from boyfriends or family members. Of those, between 80 and 85 percent end up choosing life.
"What I think women need to know is that the pregnancy center is a safe place to come to because we will listen," Gosa said, adding, "we go through a lot of Kleenexes here."
