Familes flock to library for Christian story hour
By John Labriola - Families packed the Lakes Region Library community room in Inverness Saturday morning for a family-friendly story hour featuring a children's book by Christian author and actor Kirk Cameron.
Austin Primis, a local doctor and father of three, read Cameron's As You Grow at the event, which also featured patriotic songs, prizes, a stringed instrument performance of the National Anthem by Primis' daughters, an American history lesson about the Pilgrims' struggle for religious freedom, and a message about salvation and faith in Jesus Christ.
The story hour, which drew dozens of residents from around Citrus County and from as far away as Brooksville and Lake County, was part of the "See You at the Library" national event organized by Cameron and publisher Brave Books to counteract “Drag Queen Story Hours” and other examples of LGBT indoctrination and sexually explicit content targeting children at public libraries. The Inverness library was one of nearly 270 libraries in 45 states that hosted the story hour, which was not sponsored by the library system.
Organizers believe the strong interest proves there's a hunger for seeing libraries and our nation return to the godly, Bible-based values that made America great.
"It's just a good reminder that there's a God that loves them and wants to be their savior from sin and has a better plan for their life," Primis said, adding that America needs to rediscover its Christian heritage. "There's so much history that people aren't being taught today. It's not just our story; it's God's story, and it's the story of the founding of the country."
Citrus County libraries have not hosted Drag Queen Story Hours, but they did celebrate "LGBT Pride Month" in June 2021 with rainbow-flag-draped displays featuring books and slogans promoting homosexuality and transgenderism. The displays were discontinued following intense public backlash.
